“Killing the Blues” was written by Chris Isaak's bassist Rowland Salley in the 1970s (and later formed the title track of his 2005 solo album), popularised by John Prine, recorded by Shawn Colvin, and covered by bluegrass-country star Alison Krauss and Led Zeppelin leader Robert Plant, who put their unique stamp on the poetic Americana anthem in 2007 for their acclaimed collaborative album Raising Sand. "Leaves were falling just like embers / In colors red and gold, they set us on fire / Burning just like a moonbeam in our eyes," begin the pair, harmonising their voices beautifully on this haunting acoustic portrait that meanders along slowly yet majestically. Robert Plant and Alison Krauss's Raising Sand LP won Album of the Year at the 2008 Americana Music Honors & Awards and at the 2009 Grammy Awards while the album cracked the top 5 on the UK Albums Chart, reaching number two in January 2008.
