Rita Coolidge failed to make any use commercial waves with her self-titled debut album in 1971 or its follow-up Nice Feelin', but earned respect and acclaim from critics and fans nonetheless. After a duet with husband and country star Kris Kristofferson catapulted her to the top of the charts in 1973, her luck took a turn for the better with the pair winning a Grammy in 1974 for second duet "Lover Please." Following the breakthrough commercial success of her 1977 covers album Anytime...Anywhere – with which she secured a number six chart victory on the Billboard 200 – she hit all the right notes with her comeback single of 1979, "I'd Rather Leave While I'm In Love," which reached number three on the US adult contemporary chart and number 38 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Co-written by Peter Allen and Carole Bayer Sager, the song was included on her 1979 album Satisfied for A&M.
