Alabama country star Riley Green broke through to the mainstream with 2018 single "There Was This Girl" and dropped his debut album, Different 'Round Here, the following year, on which he tended to his softer side with the heart-wrenching tribute to his grandfathers, "I Wish Grandpas Neve Died". He's in a similarly misty-eyed frame of mind on 2022 single "Hell of a Way to Go" which he road-tested at live shows prior to the track's release. Picking up from where he left off with "I Wish Grandpas Neve Died", he wades through memories of the times they spent together from fishing to watching football ("Catchin' largemouth bass, just waitin' on me / Or maybe on a fifty-yard line / Watchin' 'Bama beat the hell out of Tennessee / Or maybe on a front porch swing / Somethin' cold to drink and Mama's hand to hold"). Riley Green later shared a stripped-back acoustic version of the single that went to number 50 on the US Hot Country Songs chart.
