On their 13th album Return of the Dream Canteen – the follow-up to 2022's Unlimited Love, which welcomed Jon Frusciante and producer Rick Rubin back into the fold – Red Hot Chili Peppers paid their respects to a host of dead musicians, from Alice in Chains' Layne Stayley to Anthony Kiedis's godfather Sonny Bono and Eddie Van Halen, who gets a whole track to himself on "Eddie". The virtuoso guitarist died of a stroke on 6 October 2020 at the age of 65, and this RHCP tribute was envisioned by Flea the next day. The alt-rock song, released as a single in 2022, was inspired by Eddie Van Halen's early days on the Sunset Strip, and combines Flea's instantly recognisable basslines and Chad Smith’s standout drum work, with Anthony Kiedis’ soaring vocals. Meanwhile, returning guitarist Jon Frusciante tears through a shiver-induing solo in the second half of the song, which serves as a fitting tribute to Van Halen.
