Sometimes a song can become closely associated, almost synonymous, with an artist that didn’t write it. When you think of “Georgia on My Mind,” chances are you think of Ray Charles, whose version of the tune became by far the most popular and enduring. However, the song was originally written by the songwriting duo of Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell. Hoagy Carmichael first recorded the song himself in 1930. But the song didn’t reach stratospheric heights until Ray Charles, himself a native of the state of Georgia, recorded the definitive version for his 1960 album The Genius Hits the Road. Transformed into a soul song with the aid of producer Sid Feller, Ray Charles’s “Georgia on My Mind” was a massive success for the singer, hitting Number 1 on the Billboard 100 chart. Its success was such that in 1979 theRay Charles version of the song was declared Georgia’s official state song. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine named it the 44th greatest song of all time.
