"Cool Cat" is the smooth sound of Queen trying on funk-pop for size—and passing with flying colours. The slinky song, which was originally meant to feature David Bowie on backing vocals, was written by the late, great Freddie Mercury and Queen bassist John Deacon (the only two band members who appear on the track—Queen mainstays drummer Roger Taylor and guitarist Brian May both sat this one out) and finds the former's glass-shattering voice in full falsetto mode, hitting all the high notes over a louche bassline and guitar. The track was featured on Queen's paradigm shift of an album, Hot Space. Released in May 1982, the group's 10th studio album saw the group enter their disco phase with Freddie Mercury at the helm. The LP yielded an iconic song in the David Bowie collaboration "Under Pressure," which went to number one on the UK singles chart and remains one of the 1980s era's greatest musical exports.
