Postmodern Jukebox worked their vintage-meets-modern magic on this 1983 new wave hit from German troupe Nena, titled "99 Luftballons" (English: "99 red balloons,", which was released on the band's 1983 eponymous album. For their glitzy after-hours version of the classic pop track, Postmodern Jukebox aka the musical collective steered by New York pianist Scott Bradlee, enlisted the vocal assistance of German singer Aly Ryan, who delivers the song in German backed by a slinky lounge jazz-inspired arrangement. With the original song – which topped the charts in the UK and Canada and reached Number 2 in the US – being released during the Cold War in 1983, Nena used "99 Luftballoons" to deliver a message that tapped into the rising fear and paranoia of the period and championed the idea of letting go and of peace, becoming a clever anti-war protest song that has transcended eras.
