Porcupine Tree began laying down roots in the 1990s, steering their own ship towards a genre-defying universe that brought a myriad of rock-led styles together but was wholly unique. After signing to the Kscope record label in the late 1990s, Porcupine Tree began taking on a more commercial sound that felt aligned with the alt-rock movement. "The Sound of Muzak" was featured on the band's 2002 album In Absentia, released at the peak of this new period of mainstream attention. Fuelled by knotty guitars and tight vocal harmonies, on this critique of the music industry frontman and audiophile Steven Wilson laments the audio quality of modern-day recordings, what's been referred to as the 'loudness war'. "Soul gets squeezed out / Edges get blunt / Demographic / Gives what you want," he sings. Porcupine Tree also released a 5.1 surround-sound version of In Absentia, mixed by Grammy Award-winning producer Elliot Scheiner, pushing their audiophile credentials even further.
