In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the power ballad was a must for any self-respecting glam metal band, acting as a soothing counterpoint to the genre's raunchy hard rock leanings and late-night musings. It was also a good way to showcase the artists' more vulnerable side while simultaneously appealing to a wider audience. One fine example of this genre-defining trope is Poison's "Life Goes On," (1991) a poignant eulogy dedicated to C.C. Deville's girlfriend, who was shot and killed after a bar fight in Palm Springs, California. Written by Bret Michaels, Rikki Rockett, Bobby Dall, and C.C. DeVille, "Life Goes On" is a song about finding the strength to move on after a tragic episode. It was released as the fourth single from Poison's 1991 third studio album Flesh & Blood and reached Number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100.
