Finnish alt-rockers Poets of the Fall formed in 2003 and put themselves on the map immediately, winning the Best Debut Album of the Year and Best Newcomer of the Year gongs at the following year's Emma Awards; the Finnish equivalent of the Grammys. Their ascent continued into national superstardom with the arrival of their second album Carnival of Rust, which was released on 12 April 2006 and certified gold on home soil just three weeks later. Sounding like the lovechild of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Linkin Park, this knockout formed the LP's lead single and title track, and takes on an existential yet ambiguous character, as the song's protagonist considers life through a darkened lens, referencing destructive forces like bullfighting ("In all this turmoil, before red cape and foil come closing in for a kill") and the idea of deceiving others through mask wearing; things seemingly in conflict with the festive spirit of a carnival.
