Peter Gabriel paid weighty homage to South Africa's anti-Apartheid movement in this poignant sonic eulogy inspired by the death of the Black South African anti-Apartheid activist Steve Biko – who was a founding member of the South African Students' Organisation in 1968 and the Black People's Convention in 1972 – who died in police custody on September 12, 1977. Released in August 1980, Peter Gabriel's worldbeat protest epic "Biko" memorializes Steve Biko as well as working as a platform for his anti-Apartheid views. The politically charged milestone is delicately woven with snippets of songs from other composers, including the South African songs "Ngomhla sibuyayo" and "Senzeni Na?," with the 7" and 12" single versions also finishing with a sample from "Nkosi Sikelel iAfrika," which ended up becoming South Africa's National Anthem. "Biko," which made it to Number 38 on the UK charts and is anchored by the commanding Brazilian surdo drum, was sung by Peter Gabriel at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute concert at Wembley Stadium in 1988.
