With a long and storied career spanning 7 decades, Sir Paul McCartney has an impressively deep catalog of acclaimed songs. From chart-topping, era-defining hits to more obscure deep cuts, Paul McCartney’s work is filled to the brim with discoveries. Take Medicine Jar,” for instance, a track off the fourth studio album by Paul McCartney & Wings, 1975’s Venus and Mars. Medicine Jar is an oddity in the Wings catalog by virtue of the fact that it features lead vocals by Wings lead guitarist Jimmy McCulloch (formerly of Thunderclap Newman). It is also one of the few songs off Medicine Jar not written by Paul McCartney; it features music written by Jimmy McCulloch and Colin Allen, with lyrics by Jimmy McCulloch. It’s an anti-drug song, inspired by the frustration of seeing so many of his friends succumb to drug addiction. It was first written for Jimmy McCulloch’s former band Stone The Crows, but they broke up before it was released. Like the rest of Venus and Mars, the song was produced by Paul McCartney.
