Originally recorded by the Philly soul group Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes in 1972, "If You Don't Know Me by Now" will go down in history as Gamble & Huff's first major hit in the US charts. Written by the legendary songwriting duo of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, the song was first offered to the girl group Labelle but the trio never got around to recording it. The track was later released as a single from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes' 1972 debut album, I Miss You. Featuring Teddy Pendergrass's stirring vocals, "If You Don't Know Me by Now" is an R&B ballad that explores themes of love, understanding, and acceptance. Shortly after its commercial release, the track topped the US R&B chart and peaked at Number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. In the years that followed, singer Patti Labelle incorporated the song into her live repertoire, even recording an electrifying live version that made its way into her 1985 album, Patti. In 1989, "If You Don't Know Me by Know" reached the top of the US charts once again, this time thanks to a cover version by British soul pop act Simply Red.
