Almost five years after the release of their fifth studio album After Laughter (2017), American rockers Paramore finally announced their return to the studio in early 2022. "This Is Why," the lead single of their upcoming sixth LP of the same name, was released on September 28, 2022, to great critical acclaim, with many media outlets celebrating the track's eclectic mix of funk, indie rock, post-punk, and dance music. It was the last song to be written for the album, and features creative input by vocalist Hayley Williams, guitarist Taylor York, and drummer Zac Farro, with production by Carlos de la Garza. Lyrically speaking, "This Is Why" finds the lead singer reflecting on her bittersweet relationship with fame and its toll on her personal life. Shortly after its commercial release, the song reached Number 4 on Billboard's US Rock Airplay chart and entered the Top 10 in both New Zealand and Germany.
