Ozzy Osbourne’s “Mr. Crowley” was co-written with Randy Rhoads and Bob Daisley and released as the second single from his debut solo album, Blizzard of Ozz, on September 20, 1980 in the UK, with later release in North America during 1981. The track was recorded between March 22 and April 19, 1980 and produced by Ozzy Osbourne, Randy Rhoads, Bob Daisley, and Lee Kerslake. Inspired by occultist Aleister Crowley and sparked by references in a tarot deck found in the studio, “Mr. Crowley” opens with a dramatic keyboard solo by Don Airey, followed by Randy Rhoads’s now-classic guitar melodies, including a solo ranked among the greatest in heavy metal. The song reached number 46 on the UK Singles Chart and became a live staple across Ozzy Osbourne’s career. Its blend of haunting atmosphere, technical guitar work, and dark lyrical themes helped establish Ozzy Osbourne’s credibility as a solo artist, far from his Black Sabbath past.
