"The Circle" is a song from English rockers Ocean Colour Scene's 1996 second studio album, Moseley Shoals. It was written and produced by the band with producer Brendan Lynch, best known for his work with Paul Weller and Primal Scream. Recorded during Britpop's height of popularity, "The Circle" starts with a few seconds of feedback and rapidly turns into a pristine piece of guitar pop that incorporates elements from alternative rock and power pop in equal measure. Driven forward by slightly overdriven guitar riffs and lead singer Simon Fowler's emotive vocals, the song hits the sweet spot between 1960s nostalgia and Northern soul. Its lyrics, on the other hand, seem to be written from the point of view of an outsider with no hope of ever belonging to any group that society might deem 'normal.' Shortly after its release on September 16, 1996, "The Circle" peaked at number 6 on the UK Singles Chart while also reaching number 3 in Scotland.
