The Boston-based teen group New Edition amassed a bevy of talked-about tunes during their reign on the R&B charts that belied their young age, while also unwittingly paving the way for the '90s boyband explosion. After being discovered by the influential producer and creator of New Kids on the Block Maurice Starr, they released their debut album Candy Girl in 1983, which yielded a number-one hit in the title track and a hit in "Popcorn Love". Written and produced by Maurice Starr, Is This the End was the second single from Candy Girl and gave the group an R&B hit, peaking at number eight on the R&B singles chart. The puppy-eyed love song, which sees Ralph Tresvant step up to sing the primary lead, with Ricky Bell on outro duties to provide a contrast, is a timeless depiction of young romance: "Girl, can't you see how I feel? / All these feelings that I feel are real / Oh oh, girl / Can't you see I need you?".
