After making a name for himself penning tunes for other popular artists in the golden era of the Brill Building sound, American singer-songwriter Neil Diamond launched his solo career during the latter of the 1960s, producing a slew of hits that would eventually attain iconic status, including "Cherry, Cherry,""Red, Red Wine," and "Shilo." By the time he moved to Los Angeles in late 1969, the pop-rock-leaning sound of his early days had morphed into a cocktail of soft rock and M.O.R. music that mirrored the listening trends on American radio. Nowhere is this more evident than in "Holly Holy," his second hit of 1969 after the incredibly popular "Sweet Caroline." A gentle gospel-inspired track with strong spiritual undertones, "Holly Holy" climbed to Number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and eventually became a Platinum record. With time, the song became a staple of Neil Diamond's repertoire and was included in his 1969 LP Touching You, Touching Me, as well as in the 2009 live album Hot August Night/NYC: Live from Madison Square Garden.
