The holy grail of cover songs, Joni Mitchell's heartbreaking 1969 Grammy-winning hit "Both Sides Now" – which was inspired by her painful personal experience of single motherhood and adoption – has been recreated and revived by countless artists over the years, from Judy Collins – who recorded the first (and arguably definitive) version for her 1967 Wildflowers album – to Dion in 1968, Willie Nelson in 1970, Clannad with Paul Young in 1991 and Dolly Parton in 2006. Neil Diamond set to work on his version of the folk-rock showstopper in 1969 for his fifth studio album Touching You, Touching Me – which contained notable tracks "Holly Holy" and "Until It's Time for You to Go" – putting a rootsy spin on the tune and presenting himself in a new light with country and folk covers by Jerry Jeff Walker ("Mr. Bojangles") Fred Neil (whose track "Everybody’s Talkin'" (which was a hit for Harry Nilsson in 1969), and a smattering of his own material too ("Smokey Lady").
