It's a tale as old as TikTok... in 2020, former postman Nathan Evans sparked a global 'sea shanty' craze on the video-sharing platform after he posted an intimate performance of booze-fueled, centuries-old sailor song "Soon May the Wellerman Come" that went viral. The aspiring musician – who later bagged a record deal and quit his day job as a postie – inspired a number of high-profile names to follow suit and bring the sea shanty to life, including Andrew Lloyd Webber and Brian May. Airdrie, Lanarkshire-born Nathan Evans officially released his traditional folk-styled "Wellerman" single in 2021, and took the Number 1 spot in the UK that year, also signing a three-album recording contract with Polydor Records. Made famous for its catchy chorus – "Soon may the Wellerman come / To bring us sugar and tea and rum" – a dance remix of the timeless song by producers 220 Kid and duo Billen Ted emerged that same year to remind us all that some tunes traverse centuries.
