No one does warm-hearted ballads quite like the late, great, unforgettable Nat King Cole. In 1958, he swept in with his full-bodied rendition of the 1934 pop standard, "The Very Thought of You," which was written and composed by Ray Noble and His Orchestra with Al Bowlly on vocals, adding meaning to lines like, "The very thought of you / And I forget to do / The little ordinary things / That everyone ought to do / I'm living in a kind of daydream / I'm happy as a king." Nat King Cole featured the song as the opening track on his 1958 album of the same name, which was arranged by Gordon Jenkins and went to Number 17 on Billboard Magazine's Top LP chart, marked by its luscious collection of ballads including "But Beautiful," "This Is All I Ask," "For All We Know," and "The More I See You." Over thirty years later, Nat King Cole's daughter Natalie Cole paid tribute to her father with a version of the track for her LP Unforgettable... with Love.
