Written by country-folk great John Prine, "The Speed of the Sound of Loneliness" was originally featured on his 1986 album German Afternoons and has been covered by a number of other artists, including Kim Carnes in 1988. In 1999, the late Texas-born singer-songwriter Nanci Griffith – who died in Nashville on August 13, 2021, at the age of 68 – merged her celebrated voice with John Prine's for a duet version of the track that garnered critical acclaim. The swooning sad country ballad, which is ultimately a breakup song ("What in the world's come over you? / And what in heaven's name have you done? / You've broken the speed of the sound of loneliness / You're out there runnin' just to be on the run"), helped Nanci Griffith to scoop the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album for Other Voices, Other Rooms, with the song featured on the LP, which took its name from the Truman Capote novel of the same name.

I can’t believe what a great job you have done on the track. I was actually able to do this John Prine song for the senior assisted living residents today. They REMEMBERED and LOVED it! Thank you!
