Sampling the hook and music from Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band's 1970 song of the same name, N.W.A.'s golden age hip-hop anthem "Express Yourself," sees Dr. Dre take the solo lead (with interludes from Ice Cube and MC Ren popping up in an extended version), delivering his lines with verve and potency on a song that puts two fingers up to radio censorship. "Express Yourself" is one of the many standout and noticeably cleaner tracks on N.W.A.'s iconic 1988 album, Straight Outta Compton, and was released as the album's last single in 1989. Through Straight Outta Compton, the Californian icons become fully-fledged gangsta rap superstars, selling three million copies of the LP as well as dipping into what would become Dr. Dre's trailblazing G-funk sound and setting up Ice Cube as a world-beating MC. In 2016, Straight Outta Compton became the first rap album to be inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
