For the follow-up to their Grammy-nominated mainstream breakthrough, 2005's Good News for People Who Love Bad News, Modest Mouse brought legendary Smiths' guitarist Johnny Marr along for the ride and sailed all the way to the top of the charts, re-creating some of the success of their former release. 2007's nautical-themed LP We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank opens with the clamorous seasick riot of "March Into the Sea" before taking a detour towards slicker waters with this splashier orchestral track, "Dashboard", awash with razzle-dazzle horns and queasy strings. The tune, which makes references both to the 1987 movie Planes, Trains and Automobiles as well as Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, is a playful yet adventurous meditation on the human condition. Lead singer and guitarist Isaac Brock pits positive and negative thinking against each other as he knowingly sings: "Well, it would have been, could have been worse than you would ever know / Oh, the dashboard melted, but we still have the radio".
