“How Far I’ll Go” is a power ballad from the Disney animated feature film Moana. The song was written by Hamilton composer Lin-Manuel Miranda and was performed by Hawaiian actress and singer Aulìi Cravalho. The earliest demo of the song was titled “More” which was replaced with “I Want” but Miranda explained that while those songs addressed Moana’s desire to experience life outside of her home island, it didn’t express her genuine love of her home, family, and people. To help him tap into that struggle, the writer locked himself in his childhood bedroom at his parent’s home to get back to feeling 16, the same age as Moana. “How Far I’ll Go” won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media.
