The haunting jazz standard "These Foolish Thing (Remind Me of You)" was written by Eric Maschwitz and Jack Strachey in the early 1930s. Although Eric Maschwitz's wife Hermione Gingold claimed in her autobiography that she was the source of inspiration behind the song, the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography points to cabaret singer Jean Ross, with whom the English lyricist had a fleeting relationship during his youth. After finding a rough draft on top of a piano in Eric Maschwitz's office at the BBC, West Indian pianist Leslie "Hutch" Hutchinson made the first known recording of the song in 1936, turning it into a hit for the HMV label. In the years that followed, "These Foolish Things (Remind Me of You)" was further popularized in the United States by vocalists Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Etta James. More recently, a passionate rendition by Canadian crooner Michael Bublé peaked at Number 26 on the US charts after being included in his 2010 EP Special Delivery.
