Canadian crooner Michael Bublé took on the Holy Grail of Hit Parade hymns for his debut independent album BaBalu in 2001 and the gamble paid off; he won over critics with his version and earned himself a comparison to Bobby Darin, who had gone to Number one with the track in 1959. Jazzy standard "Mack the Knife", whose playful, swing-minded melody belies the song's dark lyrical content ("Oh, the shark, has preety teeth, dear / And he shows them pearly white / Just a jackknife has MacHeath, dear / And he keeps it, way out of sight / When that shark bites with his teeth, dear / Scarlet billows begin to spread / Fancy gloves though, wears old MacHeath, babe / So there's never, never ever a trace of red") was originally composed by Kurt Weill with lyrics by Bertolt Brecht for their 1928 music drama The Threepenny Opera (German: Die Die Dreigroschenoper) and began life as a medieval murder ballad.
