Included in their critically acclaimed third studio album Master of Puppets (1986), Metallica's "Disposable Heroes" showcased the band's instrumental dexterity while conveying a defiant anti-war message. Written by lead singer and guitarist James Hetfield, lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, and drummer Lars Ulrich, "Disposable Heroes" is narrated from the point of view of a soldier going to battle against his will. Borrowing its name from the segment in Ray Bradbury's dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451, the song exposes the atrocity of the US draft system, which sees young men as interchangeable pieces of the war machinery. It is also one of the most intense songs Metallica has ever recorded, with some sections reaching 220 beats per minute. Even though it wasn't released as a single, "Disposable Heroes" was the first song from Master of Puppets to be performed live at the 1985 Metal Hammer Fest in St. Goarshausen, Germany.
