Merle Haggard has said goodbye to the 'girl he loves' and is as 'blue as he can be' on "Please Mr. D.J." "Oh please Mr. D.J., play that song I heard you play / And send it out to someone who broke my heart today," he implores, looking to music for a cure to mend his broken heart. The country legend is in full melancholic mode on this tear-soaked heartbreaker, one of the stars of Merle Haggard's 1965 debut album for Capitol Records, Strangers. For a first attempt at an album, Strangers is pretty impressive; Merle Haggard's songwriting and voice sound fully developed while the album went to number nine on the Billboard country albums chart, also spawning a hit—his first US top ten to date—in memorable scene-setting opening track "(My Friends Are Gonna Be) Strangers," which went on to be covered by numerous artists over the years, including George Jones, Ernest Tubb, Porter Wagoner, Ferlin Husky and more.
