The power ballad "Objects in the Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are" was the third single from Meat Loaf's sixth studio album Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell (1993). As was the case with all of Meat Loaf's previous releases, the album was entirely written and produced by composer Jim Steinman. A three-part epic centered upon the seasons of summer, winter, and spring, "Objects in the Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are" drew inspiration from the singer's troubled childhood and the tragic episodes he had to overcome throughout his life. Taking its name from the safety warning on car side mirrors in the United States, the song borrowed parts of the melody from Jim Steinman's "Surf's Up," which appeared in his only solo album Bad for Good. Shortly after its commercial release, "Objects in the Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are" reached Number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Number 26 on the UK Official Singles Chart.
