Few pop songs are as instantly recognizable as Billy Joel's 1983 hit single "Uptown Girl." From the drum fill that kicks off the track to its peppy vocal melodies and its lush harmonies, you'd be hard-pressed to find anything in the song that's not downright memorable. The Long Island native got the initial inspiration from his then-girlfriend, supermodel Elle MacPherson, but later reworked the lyrics and made the song about her future wife Christine Brinkley, who also appears in the song's iconic mechanic shop video. Originally titled "Uptown Girls," the track's lyrics talk about a working-class man falling in love with a girl from a higher social status. It was Billy Joel's first and only UK Number 1 hit, and it reached Number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1997, the punk supergroup Me First and the Gimme Gimmes included a pop-punk version of "Uptown Girl" on their studio debut, Have a Ball. The song would reach Number 1 on the UK charts once again after being covered by the British boy band Westlife in 2001.
