Norfolk, Virginia, singer-songwriter Matt Maeson first emerged on the scene in 2016 with his debut single "Cringe." The very definition of a sleeper hit, the track entered the Top 10 of the Adult Alternative Songs chart in 2019 and spent four weeks atop the Alternative Airplay chart in August of that year, giving the up-and-coming artist his first taste of recognition. This was also the case for his song "Hallucinogenics," which was originally released as the third single from his studio debut, Bank on the Funeral, in 2019. After the release of a remix featuring Lana del Rey in 2020, "Hallucinogenics" reached Number 1 on the US Rock Airplay chart and was eventually certified Platinum by the RIAA for sales of over 1 million copies. "Hallucinogenics" was written by Matt Maeson and James Flannigan, and addresses the singer's struggles with depression following the 2017 promotional tour for his first EP, Who Killed Matt Maeson.
