Who doesn’t love a good tongue-twister? And few tongue-twisters are as famous as the iconic catchphrase from Mary Poppins, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!” First appearing as part of the 1965 musical film adaptation of the books by PL Travers starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!” was immediately hailed as one of the film’s most memorable musical sequences. The song is an ode to a word that can be used to express just about any emotion. It was written by Robert B. Sherman and Richard M. Sherman, the songwriting duo known as the Sherman Brothers who also co-wrote many famous Disney songs. When adapting the story of Mary Poppins to the stage for the 2004 stage musical production, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!” was one of the songs that was kept mostly intact from the original film. The play first opened at the West End, and an album by the original London cast was released before the play found its way to Broadway. Laura Michelle Kelly performed the song in the play’s titular role and accompanying album.
