Grammy-winning US musician, actor and NASCAR racing driver Marty Robbins quenched his thirst for classic country on this western standard from 1959. Originally written in 1936 by Canadian singer-songwriter Bob Nolan – founding member of the Sons of the Pioneers – "Cool Water" depicts a parched man and his mule traveling the desert in desperate need of water. "All day I've faced a barren waste / Without the taste of water, cool water / Old Dan and I with throats burned dry / And souls that cry for water / Cool, clear water," coos Marty Robbins on this multi-part harmony-rich cowboy fable. "Cool Water," which was featured on Marty Robbins's 1959 album Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs, has been covered by a range of artists including Joni Mitchell, Johnny Cash, the Replacements and Fleetwood Mac – who recorded a version for their 1982 album Mirage – and Tom Jones, who included a version on his 1967 album Green, Green Grass of Home.
