Following the success of their 2017 collaborative single "Silence" – which went to number 3 in the UK charts – Marshmello and Khalid put their heads together again for "Numb," sweeping away the worries with a breezy, dancefloor-ready fusion of trap and pop stirred along by a melodic house undercurrent. Intended to offer a dose of light relief in the form of a dance-pop tune, "Numb" was perfectly timed to soundtrack the summer season. Produced by Marshmello and Digital Farm Animals, and written alongside Khalid, Richard Boardman and Pablo Bowman, it was released as a single in June 2022 and accompanied by a feel-good video that depicted a hedonistic pool party scene. "Numb" went to number 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 and charted in countries all over the world, including New Zealand and Hungary. The single was released in the wake of Marshmello's 2021 studio album Shockwave and Khalid's second studio album Free Spirit.
