"My Church" is the lead single off Maren Morris's debut studio album Hero. The Texas-born singer was driving around California trying to clear her head the day before a writing appointment. She had recently gone through a tough breakup and was frustrated by her lack of song ideas. She was trying to find Santa Monica and just kept driving west until she reached the ocean. Looking out at the ocean, she remembers thinking, "This is like church to me." She applied that church metaphor to how she had always found solace from songs on the radio and wrote "My Church". She sings a shout-out to country music legends Hank Williams and Johnny Cash. "When Hank brings the sermon / And Cash leads the choir / It gets my cold, cold heart burning / Hotter than a ring of fire." The song features slide guitar, big drums, and a church full of gospel vocals courtesy of the McCrary Sisters.
