Remolding the synth-pop instrumental from Empire of the Sun's 2008 track "Half Mast" into a tricksy, agile hip-hop jam that plays around with speed and form, "The Spins" showed Mac Miller at his innovative, fun-loving best on a song that evokes the spinning feeling some people experience from smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol at the same time. "The Spins" was featured on the sample-heavy K.I.D.S.(Kickin' Incredibly Dope Shit) (2010) – the fourth mixtape from the late Pittsburgh-born rapper who died from an accidental drug overdose of cocaine, fentanyl, and alcohol at his home, aged 26 on September 7, 2018. Due to its flagrant use of samples from huge stars, including Q-Tip's remix of Nas '"The World Is Yours" and Lord Finesse's "Hip 2 Da Game", Mac Miller ran into some legal difficulties with the mixtape, but in spite of this, K.I.D.S. put the late beloved rapper on the map, repackaged into a deluxe version in 2020.
