With this in mind, the song—an exercise in lo-fi cloud rap marked out lyrically by its admissions of guilt, struggle, hardship, and ultimately, recovery and rehabilitation—and its Kill Bill: Volume 2-inspired music video, which hauntingly features Mac Miller escaping from a coffin, are both imbued with a level of poignancy and prescience that few other contemporary recordings can match. Mac Miller wrote "Self Care" about his relationship struggles with Ariana Grande, from whom he separated in May 2018; two months before the release of this song.
