The mighty Lynyrd Skynyrd, one of the most legendary bands in the history of Southern rock, are renowned for their long, anthemic rock 'n' roll tunes, their blistering guitar solos, and their pride in their Southern heritage. “On the Hunt,” a slow-burning blues stomper written by guitarist Allen Collins and frontman Ronnie Van Zant, is a good example of the more brooding, menacing side of their musical palette. “On the Hunt” was originally recorded for the band’s third full-length, 1975’s Nuthin’ Fancy. The album was produced by the band’s frequent collaborator Al Kooper and is notable for being the band’s first time recording with their new drummer Artimus Pyle, who brought a distinctive style to their powerful rhythm section. “On the Hunt” was also one of the songs included as part of the band’s 1991 box set, simply titled Lynyrd Skynyrd, which was certified gold by the RIAA in November 1997.
