Luke Combs added a countryfied touch to his 2018 cover of "Dive" by Ed Sheeran that stripped the song back to its melodic essentials, covering the 2017 cut initially in his live performances before joining forces with the UK superstar in for an unlikely live duet in 2022. The North Carolina-raised country star brought Ed Sheeran on stage with him at London’s C2C Festival in March 2017, with the latter turning up to belt out the song's second verse, pre-chorus and chorus much to the enjoyment of the screaming crowd. Ed Sheeran originally included "Dive" – which he wrote with Benny Blanco and Julia Michaels and features backing vocals from Jessie Ware – on his third studio album ÷(2017) and, following the album's release, it went to number 8 on the UK Singles Chart. The song, like much of Ed Sheeran's material, is about his long-term love and wife, Cherry Seaborn, while drawing sonic inspiration from late '50s/early '60s soul.
