Fifteen years before the blockbuster pop of "Footloose" would seal his fate, Kenny Loggins was laying down roots as a hirsute soft-rock duo with former Buffalo Springfield member and partner in crime Jim Messina as Loggins and Messina. The pair formed in the early '70s and were signed to Columbia, with whom they released their debut album, Sittin' In, in 1971. They went on to release studio albums at the rate of one a year, including 1972's Loggins and Messina, which featured "Angry Eyes" as its last track, just before "Lady of My Heart." It's a freewheeling, groove-laden finale that's packed with '70s-sounding vintage vocal harmonies and plumped up with saxophone; soft instrumentation that belies the song's lyrics ("With those Angry Eyes / Well, I bet you wish you could / Cut me down with those Angry Eyes..."). "Angry Eyes" was later given an R&B rebirth in 1978 via a cover by The Pointer Sisters.
