The public’s first preview of Lizzo’s EP Coconut Oil was lauded by critics upon its debut, earning praise for its inspirational message of joy and anticipation in the face of adversity. The song was written by Lizzo in collaboration with Eric Frederic, and produced by Ricky Reed. It was originally written to be included as part of the soundtrack for the 2016 film Barbershop: The Next Cut. The song didn’t chart when it was first released, but it generated interest in light of Lizzo’s continued success with songs such as “Truth Hurts.” It also got a boost from Lizzo’s performance of the song at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards, immediately after which it entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart at Number 52. It would go on to peak at Number 3, becoming Lizzo’s second chart-topping hit.
