Alabama's best-selling country vocal group Little Big Town emerged in 2002 with their self-titled debut and spent the next 20 years evolving their four-part harmonies across a string of hit country albums, including 2020's Grammy-nominated work Nightfall. "Three Whiskeys and the Truth" is featured on the band's tenth studio album Mr. Sun, which was released via Capitol Nashville in 2022 and self-produced by the band. Steered by lead vocals from Karen Fairchild, "Three Whiskeys and the Truth" riffs on the country music ideal of "three chords and the truth" and sees the group join forces again with songwriting trio the Love Junkies (Hillary Lindsey, Lori McKenna and Liz Rose) with whom they penned their 2014 hit "Girl Crush." Dressing up their heartbreak ballad in bare-bones guitar and country music stylings, the band sing of the pain that makes itself known at night with booze: "The moon gets to shinin' and I get to thinkin' / Think I’ll be fine but then I start drinkin'."
