Stripping back the thick layers of electronic rock, Linkin Park went off-piste to bring the curtain down on their fourth album Thousand Suns, (2010) offering up a vulnerable yet optimistic acoustic meditation. "The Messenger" was a curveball for the band who built their reputation on high-powered nu-metal explosions that packed an almighty punch. Here, they show themselves in a softer new light. Meanwhile, Thousand Suns—which was produced by the band's co-founder Mike Shinoda and the powerhouse Rick Rubin—proved divisive among dyed-in-the-wool Linkin Park fans but hit the highs of commercial success nonetheless, zooming to the top of the charts in multiple countries worldwide.
