In the late 1980s, Lenny Kravitz was an aspiring songwriter trying to get his foot in the door of the music industry. Despite being the son of a renowned actress and a television news producer, labels wouldn't sign him because of his multiracial background; they deemed his music wasn't "black enough" or "white enough." After a handful of years performing under the pseudonym Romeo Blue, he finally managed to land a recording contract with Virgin Records and released his studio debut Let Love Rule in 1989. An eclectic cocktail of 1960s influences that ranged from funk to rock and R&B, Let Love Rule served as a letter of introduction from an ambitious artist ready to take on the world. Inspired by an altercation he had with a cab driver in New York City, "Mr. Cab Driver," the album's third single, managed to tackle issues like racism and discrimination with plenty of humor and a rollicking rockabilly-inspired instrumental.
