"Doin' Time" is a track by the American band Sublime from their eponymous third album. Released on November 25, 1997, the song touches on the anguish of a man who, betrayed by his unfaithful partner, draws parallels to feeling incarcerated. Musically speaking, this summer-soaked track features samples of Herbie Mann's cover of George Gershwin's "Summertime" from the opera Porgy and Bess, the Beastie Boys' "Slow and Low," Ini Kamoze's "Jump for Jah" and "Come Now," Malcolm McLaren's "Buffalo Gals," and David Axelrod's "Holy Thursday." Chart-wise, "Doin' Time" hit number 87 on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at number 28 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. Apart from the original, various renditions surfaced: Wyclef Jean and The Pharcyde contributed alternate versions to the single's disc, and a version with Snoop Dogg found its way onto bootlegs. Decades later, in 2019, Lana Del Rey breathed new life into the track. She teased her cover on May 7, officially releasing it ten days later, marking the premiere of a Sublime documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival. Featuring a more orchestral approach, her mesmerizing rendition was released as the fourth single off of her album Norman Fucking Rockwell! and managed to peak at number 59 on the Billboard Hot 100.
