Sung by the incomparable David Bowie, "Within You" is one of the high points of the Labyrinth soundtrack album, which he co-created with composer Trevor Jones and released in 1986 for the Jim Henson hit fantasy film. Gothic overtones abound on "Within You," which is driven by a rush of ominous synths and David Bowie's signature histrionic warble, here in his role as Jareth, the Goblin King. Add to this the lovesick lyrics ("Live without your sunlight / Love without your heartbeat / I, I can't live within you / I can't live within you") and the song becomes an anchor for the movie's theme of unrequited love. The late David Bowie recorded another four tracks for Labyrinth: theme song "Underground," "Magic Dance," "Chilly Down," and "As the World Falls Down." The soundtrack is widely considered among the best of the 1980s, despite only reaching number 68 on the US Billboard 200 at the time.
