Hailing from the French Guiana and the French West Indies, the Caribbean act La Compagnie Créole formed in 1975 but it wasn't until 1983 that they finally achieved international fame throughout the French-speaking world with the hit single "Vive le douanier Rousseau." After the moderate success of the Creole-language albums Ba mwen an ti bo (1976) and Blogodo (1982), the band, which had previously experimented with Caribbean rhythms such as zouk and kadans, decided to start singing in French; a decision that was key in helping boost their popularity in the Old Continent. In 1983, La Compagnie Créole released their third full-length Vive le douanier Rousseau, which became one of the best-selling albums in French-speaking Europe, selling over 40,000 copies. This success was largely thanks to the album's title track, an infectious zouk dance number that propelled the group to international fame in a matter of weeks. "Vive le douanier Rousseau" remains one of their most beloved tracks and was covered by Katerine, Francis et ses Peintres in 2011.
