It was composed by songwriters Joan Javits and Philip Springer, who were commissioned to come up with a holiday song for Eartha Kitt in August 1953. The singer turned the song into not just the best-selling Christmas song of the year, but also one of the most recognizable holiday tunes of all time, inspiring pop divas like Madonna and Kylie Minogue to record their own versions.
