Bringing bagpipes to the nu-metal arena, Korn folded a surprising blast of this centuries-old woodwind instrument – played by the band's Jonathan Davis – into their innovative Korn album track "Shoots and Ladders," on which they stitch together a pastiche of classic nursery rhymes before plunging into aggressive guitars, drumming and vocals for the screaming headbanger of a chorus. "Shoots and Ladders" was released as the LP's third single in 1995, and fosters a sense of familiarity with its nursery rhyme references, which span the bubonic plague-era "Ring Around The Rosie" (also known as "Ring A Ring Of Roses","London Bridge Is Falling Down," and more. But as you’d expect from the nu-metal giants who brought us "Freak on a Leash," the naiveité of childhood has been replaced by something more ominous and threatening, reminding of the tragedy and terror that lurked within so many of these seemingly innocent rhymes.
